Powertrain systems

Our expert teams engineer powerful and efficient powertrain solutions for your individual applications. We provide concepts for internal-combustion engines and hybrid powertrains as well as electric drive concepts with batteries or fuel cells.

Electrified drives

We provide you with customized powertrain solutions for electromobility, along with electrification components for the entire vehicle. The proven basis: our tried-and-tested volume-production technology.

We are happy to advise you on the development of electrified drive concepts as well as charging concepts – from the initial idea to prototyping and volume production. Our solutions are tailored specifically to your vehicle concepts to ensure optimum performance across all vehicle segments – from passenger cars to commercial vehicles and two-wheelers. Our vehicle control units represent the central E/E architecture component for all powertrain topologies and feature advanced functions for controlling the onboard systems, including thermal management, and ensuring optimum charging of a traction battery.

Our products at a glance:

Together we will analyze your specific requirements and optimize the architecture of your electric drive system. Based on our tried-and-tested components, we provide customer-specific hardware and software, mechanical systems for electric motors, e-axles, and power electronics.

The latest generation of our inverter power electronics uses 800 V silicon carbide semiconductor technology for even higher efficiency, increased performance, and longer ranges.

Our 3-in-1 e-axles (e-machine, transmission, and inverter), which are available in different performance classes, reduce the previous complexity of the electric drive and make the entire powertrain significantly more compact and efficient.

Our charger-converter is a combined system solution comprising an onboard charger and DC/DC converter. This system solution supports all vehicle-to-X functions for integrated charging.

Our 48 V battery, which is available with an optional 48/12 V DC/DC converter, efficiently supports the powertrain and ensures a reliable power supply within the vehicle. This is particularly important for safety-relevant electronic systems or the emission-optimized operation of hybrid powertrains.

As an overarching software solution, we offer battery in the cloud features such as anomaly detection as well as smart charging management – including in the form of coordinated software sharing models, if required.

Fuel cell systems

We offer a broad range of services for individually designed fuel cell systems and support the entire engineering process of your fuel cell project – from the initial design of the powertrain topology to the creation of the final vehicle.

Regardless of the specific application and vehicle segment in which you intend to use a fuel cell-electric drive – we can provide you with a customized system solution. We will address all your specific requirements in all project phases – from the first simulation to the final implementation and from the initial concept proposal to volume production maturity. Our services cover everything from transforming existing vehicle infrastructures to developing entirely new fuel cell vehicles.

We will work with you to identify the ideal fuel cell system for your use case. Depending on the initial situation, we do this by performing powertrain simulations, evaluating measurements from an existing vehicle, or incorporating your requirements into downstream system engineering.

As well as the configuration of the air system, thermal management, and electrical system for your fuel cell-electric drive, our service spectrum also includes the provision of the necessary control units along with a customized software solution.

We have access to a broad array of system components developed by Bosch specifically for use in fuel cell systems, but we are also open to the integration of third-party components. You can thus choose from existing volume-production systems, which we then optimize to suit your specific use case.

The component definition is followed by the mechanical integration of the fuel cell system on the part of our CAD experts. In this case, the systems can be individually and flexibly adapted to the specific circumstances, such as the available installation space, given temperature conditions, or vibration acceleration requirements.

Once the design has been completed, the system proceeds to the test bench. The fuel cell system is set up completely and its calibration optimized before the system is subjected to extensive testing. We can also assist you with the homologation of the overall vehicle and offer support with the start of volume production.

Our engineering team has already implemented numerous fuel cell applications:

  • Airport luggage hauler with fuel cell-electric drive
  • Range extender for city buses
  • Demonstration vehicles for Asian markets
  • Powerful fuel cell systems for use in heavy trucks and long-distance parcel delivery vans
  • Long-standing expertise in fuel cell projects and as an engineering partner
  • Use of tried-and-tested technologies and volume-production concepts for reduced engineering effort
  • Individual solutions, tailored to your use case
