Diagnostics

The diagnostic capability of vehicles is crucial in development, production, daily use, and decommissioning. We design comprehensive concepts for vehicle diagnostics using advanced engineering methods.

Concepts

We provide tailored, multisystem concepts for vehicle diagnostics and support you from the first steps to the series production phase.

As a customer, you need a comprehensive vehicle diagnostics concept tailored to your requirements, covering the entire vehicle life cycle: from engineering and production to the automotive aftermarket and decommissioning. We provide holistic diagnostics solutions, focusing on OBD2, harmonized across all components and platforms. This approach reduces coordination efforts with suppliers and workshops, minimizes errors in workshop services due to complexity, and lowers the costs and efforts associated with developing diagnostic devices when diagnostic concepts are not applicable across different systems.

Vehicle diagnostics with a focus on OBD2, diagnostics and FOTA concepts

We start with comprehensive diagnostic requirement analyses and develop vehicle diagnostics and FOTA concepts tailored to your needs. In the subsequent engineering phases, we create specifications using Unified Diagnostic Services (UDS) or Service-Oriented Vehicle Diagnostics (SOVD), along with software programming and variant coding. This is grounded in a globally harmonized vehicle diagnostics framework. During the engineering phases before production, we assist with defining diagnostic objects (DIDs/RIDs/DTCs) at the component level, creating ODX-based templates, and conducting diagnostic gap analyses. We also offer guided troubleshooting support. Additionally, we provide trainings overing all diagnostic engineering phases.

Service-Oriented Vehicle Diagnostics: The future of vehicle diagnostics is evolving with the use of service-oriented architectures and high-performance computers (HPC). Following the latest ASAM standards, we deliver concepts and specifications to tackle the challenges of diagnosing HPC software under new boundary conditions.

Diagnostic software engineering: Diagnostic systems must meet diverse requirements, such as safety, multicore processing, and OBD, while minimizing resource usage. Our experts assist with both implementation and validation, covering software on embedded ECUs and Software as a Product (SaaP) with appropriate diagnostic connections on central computers.

Supplier management: A uniform diagnostic concept across the vehicle can be applied to different electronic control units. This includes:

  • accurate implementation concerning vehicle and component specifications
  • clarification of open questions about the diagnostic concept
  • deviation management
  • status tracking for individual vehicle development milestones (end-of-line, volume-production tests, homologation, etc.)

We support supplier management to ensure minimal resource impact and optimal diagnostic development within your application.

  • You benefit from our extensive diagnostic experience, which encompasses everything from the initial concept to volume production and the aftermarket
  • Vehicle-wide diagnostic concepts that harmonize various electronic control units in a single vehicle architecture
  • Simplified workshop processes thanks to harmonization
  • Simple development of concepts to enable complete and uniform ECU diagnosis
  • Complete development chain for cloud-based diagnostic approaches
  • Alignment of the FOTA strategy with the UDS or SOVD diagnostic concept

OBD consulting

The legal requirements for onboard diagnostics (OBD) and their complexity are continuously rising. This makes our OBD consulting service essential for staying compliant and managing technical challenges efficiently.

Regardless of the powertrain types you use or the markets you operate in, as experts in OBD regulations, we can advise you comprehensively. We define the requirements for onboard vehicle diagnostics based on current legal regulations and refine them for your target system – at both the complete vehicle level and within individual vehicle domains and components.

Onboard diagnostics, OBD consulting with a focus on OBD2 from Bosch Engineering

Find out more

Based on our extensive experience with OBD approvals and our collaboration with regulatory authorities, we are perfectly positioned to advise you on all legal matters related to onboard diagnostics. We cover all:

  • powertrain types (ICE, HEV, PHEV, BEV, FCEV, etc.)
  • vehicle segments (PC, MD, HD, 2-wheelers, etc.)
  • relevant domains (powertrain, brakes, steering, airbags, etc.)
  • markets (USA CARB and EPA, EU, China, Japan, South Korea, Brazil, and many more)

Our core services are:

  • establishing and developing the OBD requirements at overall system level as well as within the domains and components
  • planning and checking the milestones of OBD engineering
  • OBD system development of the E/E architecture at vehicle level
  • effect chain analysis of OBD-relevant software functions
  • support with homologation and the creation of certification and official documents
  • certification measurements for diagnostic PVE
  • OBD demonstration on our state-of-the-art test benches

We are also there to support you as specialists for OBD applications for all powertrain types.

Example applications:

  • High-performance engines (6, 8 and more cylinders) demand particular attention with regard to onboard diagnostics due to the many special solutions.
  • Hybrid powertrains, such as PHEVs, have a complex system structure with many OBD-relevant ECUs, requiring customized solution approaches.
  • OBD for electric vehicles (zero-emission vehicles) is newly anchored in the legislation. Here, the OBD relevance of the systems, components, and functions must be assessed on a case-by-case basis.
  • We also specialize in small production quantities and understand the corresponding unique OBD requirements.
  • Benefit from our many years of effective collaboration with official bodies and regulatory authorities worldwide
  • We assist you with precise communication with authorities
  • We have been designated a technical service for EU-wide applications by the German Federal Motor Vehicle Registration Agency
  • In-depth knowledge from software and application projects for EU, US, and CN market approvals
  • Expert support for small-volume manufacturers and niche customers
  • Extensive project expertise in the field of sports cars and supercars
